Hi Folks,
To whom it may concern TPMO3 is defunct after a loud explosion about 20 mins ago.
So anyone who was partnering that rig is unfortunately in the position of having a duff wingman and I have no way of recovering the system or Boinc that was on it as of now.
Come daylight I will try and salvage the hard drive and install it on another rig and abort any TPMO3 WU I'm able to.

whats the best way off releasing the cache WU? disconnect project or abort WU?

Hi Folks,
I managed to boot to the HDD from the now defunct TPMO3 and aborted ALL WU for both the projects it was atattched to
So everyone who was winging with those tasks should find them re-issued to a working rig soon I hope.

Bloody PSU decided to give up the ghost.. reason undetermined but probably due to age and poor construction [el cheapo psu]Made quite a bang, sounded like a 32 cal pistol firing:-)
Anyways I had another PSU and Mobo so I rebuilt the rig. Of course Windoze and other programms didn't like the hardware change, so I had to re validate Win7 and NS etc
But its back in business and crunching during cheap rate electricity times, its also had a slew of 'lost tasks' downloaded, this dispite NNT being set..
Still if the lost tasks are the ones that I failed to abort properly I guess its going to end up ok for the wingpersons from the 1st iteration of TPMO3.

That was the suppressor MOV destroying itself on the incoming mains. They only can absorb so many joules of energy protecting the device and when it is exceeded, they explode like a firecracker spraying shards of hot silicon around the power supply. Definitely will make you jump out of your seat.

Recently I have had also some hardware destructing events but not so noisy :)

Hi Mikey,
No power surge, just me drawing more power from the dratted thing than it was up to delivering, was supposed to be a 750 Watt psu, wasn't drawing 750 Watt when it went kapow.. Methinks a smoothing eletrolitic cap was what went south but I cant be bothered to can opener the thing to check.

Probably unless you've heard both an MOV and an electrolytic cap going bang, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the two. And caps are constructed differently among manufacturers and the sound different between brands when they go. An MOV pretty much sounds the same among manufacturers and the difference between sounds owes itself to the size rating in joules absorbed. Small MOV's make a small sound and big MOV's make a large sound. The MOV sound is a very loud, sharp report, much like a gunshot like Cliff described. Thus my first guess what failed. A cap has more of a slower report. And an MOV can fail just because it got weak because of too many trips to the upper threshold of its capacity but not quite just over it. The substrate gets punched though and weakened and finally can't hold up. Can end up blowing at lower than its rated capacity due to aging. The light show each produce is different too. MOV is like a flash bang grenade and the cap often produces a pretty aluminum confetti shower.
