Now that I have a job, I thought I might try to get a 175. I can't find any though. Yes, I know I could get a newer Intel or AMD system, but I can't justify that expense just yet. Last I saw a 175 was going for about $150... If I build the system I want, it'll probably come in at around $2,000-$2,500... ;-)

I'll keep my eyes open in case I stumble upon anything from govt surplus, but 175's are about as rare as hen's teeth nowadays.
I seem to remember that they weren't made in any great quantity even when they were new and the few that you'll find that are still boxed and new are now fetching a higher price since the only people willing to buy them now are those that need them at nearly any price to repair an existing piece of equipment.

Since its socket 939 you got there is it safe to assume you got a PCIe GPU?
I would get a cheap AM2 mainboard, a Brisbane dualcore and a 2x1gig DDR2 kit, and for the rest use what you already got. Less than $200 and you can still ebay the old board/CPU/RAM.

Nope. I have an AGP card (evga 6800GT). If I start thinking about motherboard replacement, I'd start thinking about a new system build...which I certainly wouldn't consider AM2 processors at this point...
See, when I didn't have a job, the processors were apparently plentiful. Now that I do have a job, they appear to have completely dropped out of the distribution channels...

Hi Brian,
just buy an Asrock AliveDual-ESata2. It has an AM2-Socket and both, AGP and PCIe-Slots. So it supports AGP and PCIe. I´m owning this board with an Athlon X2 6000+ and started with an ATI 1950pro (AGP). It works fine and without any problems.
So you can use your old AGP-Card with newer processors, including Phenoms.

How well will it perform though? I know at least some of the agp/pcie boards only ran the AGP slot at PCI (not express) speeds.
If the machine is intended for crunchbox/server use only, a better choice would be aboard with an onboard gpu or to watch deal sites for a $10ish 6100-6200/7100/7300 PCIe card. The power savings of a low end GPU will pay for themselves in a year if you don't need to game on it.

I'm grateful for "suggestions" on upgrades, but I am only interested in the processor. No motherboard, no RAM, no video card.
Why?
All of those will be complete unknowns as to the stability. Additionally, AM2 showed little to no real improvement over Socket 939. Considering I have my memory clocked at DDR-500 with 3-3-3-1T timings, DDR2-667 would likely end up being slower due to increased latency. To compensate for that, I wouldn't be looking at "value ram", but more like DDR2-800 kits like G.Skill, Corsair Dominator, or OCZ Reaper...with even the potential of needing to get DDR2-1066...based on AM2 reviews by Anandtech...
I have no intention of replacing a bunch of stuff for the same overall performance with the increased unknown of whether or not the components are stable. When I want to do that, I'll be looking at Core2 or Phenom (if priced competitively)...for a whole new system build...
