I was talking about the 6800, not the 6800XT (since the 6800 is a better bang for buck) and I was using arch’s 6800+5700 host as the comparator. Both cards in the same system to reduce other variables that come up when comparing two totally different setups (like CPU speed, OS/software, etc). On arch’s system, the 6800 is about 10% faster than the 5700, on the same exact system. The 6800XT is a little faster than the 6800 for Einstein, but not by enough to nearly justify the difference in price. Check the earlier posts in this thread.
the 6800XT might be faster than a RadeonVII for gaming (which is what techpowerup shows) but it’s slower for Einstein. You cannot use games performance to gauge Einstein. In games, the Radeon VII is like on par with a RTX 2070 or 5700XT, which we know are objectively slower at Einstein.

The 6800XT is reportedtly VERY good at crypto mining too and well worth the money according to people who do that kind of stuff. NO crypto mining and Einstein crunching are not comparable but it does explain the higher costs for the XT version of the card.

I assume in referring to "arch" you mean me, and are referring to this system.
I'd not suggest using results from this system (on which I am typing at the moment--it is my daily driver), as a sound basis for Einstein performance comparisons of card types. I throttle down both cards heavily for thermal management and power budget reasons. In fact, just this morning I made further adjustment, and as of right now the 5700 is commanded to what the Radeon software is pleased to call "-50%" "power limit", which is the same as it was yesterday, while the 6800 is newly commanded to a max frequency of 600 MHz (down from 800 minutes ago).
Aside from throttling, both cards are somewhat held back by CPU support. The CPU on this machine is a true 4-core one, with no hyperthreading. The cards are running Einstein GRP at 2X, and would certainly be more productive running 3X by themselves on a machine which could provide more undivided support attention to them.
Back to the original question--I don't think that 10% is even close to the true relative performance of 6800 over 5700 on Einstein GRP.
Ran across a couple of Rx 6900 xt's on bid that were below MSRP. So I bid on both upto my available funding.
Since both have less than a day before they run out, maybe I will get them.

With the 6900XT at default settings, I tried 1-3 WUs. Run times below were averages across some 10 WUs each without any CPU load, so not a large result base.
This seems to be slower than the experience of a top 50 Rx 6800 xt?

Early in March, 2021, when Big Navi cards were scarce, I formed the opinion that I particularly wanted the XFX MERC 319 flavor. I registered my interest with B&H Photovideo, a major retailer here in the USA.
A half-hour ago I got an email notification:
Good News: at that moment they had the XFX MERC 319 6800 BLACK Xt in stock and available for online purchase (the buy button was still displayed 26 minutes after they sent the email).
Bad News: the price was $1,499.99, and all of the lower-priced flavors of 6800 and 6800 Xt were NOT available for immediate purchase.
Outrageous. What a mess. I've heard predictions for another 5 months, if we are lucky.
I already told my story about my overheating, useless 5700XT that I fixed by modifying the fan profile. Compared to today's prices, my performance/price ratio is enviable.
They’ve been saying “a few more months” for over a year now. Best bet is to keep trying the Newegg shuffle when a card you want comes available. It’s luck, but you may get lucky once.
AMD by far has been having the worst availability through this whole situation. Nvidia has had more units available and haven’t been nearly as hard to find.
i definitely wouldn’t advise anyone pay 2-3x MSRP for a card, no matter how bad you want it.
Sorry to revive this old thread, but I finally got a 6800 XT. Yes, I know 7000 series is scheduled to be released within the year. I cannot believe I've been waiting so long for prices to get back to "normal". I made up my mind a year ago about what I wanted and thought was a good deal, I forgot to adjust for the fact that these cards are now nearly 2 years old. So, you all have a 12-18 month head start crunching on my card. Embarrassing. :-(
So, at least I can benefit from your experience: What ended up being the optimal number of concurrent WUs on the 6800 XT?

That was also last year, with possibly slower running tasks.
