Keith,

Talk about "a headless server" installation please.

Headless clearly can still run Gpus?

What kind of remote desktop?

VNC?

I have seen the some of the various things you can do with Boinc commandline.  So BoincTui or BoincTasks allow you to do that remotely?

Can you use the BoincMgr via its ip address to remotely manage a "headless server"?

Thank you.

"headless" just means operating without a monitor/keyboard/mouse. the system could be with or without a desktop environment, just that you access it totally remotely.

all of my systems are technically headless, all accessed remotely with no monitor/kb/mouse. one of them still has the normal Ubuntu desktop, the other two have the server version of Ubuntu without any desktop (CLI only).

the two CLI systems, I access via ssh in the terminal of my laptop, you can do pretty much everything with CLI if you know what you're doing. occasionally I will just open a normal BOINC Manager on my laptop and use that to access the CLI system(s) remotely for BOINC specific functions.

the system with a desktop, I access via VNC from my laptop (I use the built-in Ubuntu sharing options as the VNC "server" on the host + the RealVNC client on my laptop)

Keith uses BoincTasks, which is essentially a fancy version of the Normal BOINC Manager that allows you to be connected to multiple hosts simultaneously

Ian, occasionally I see that you are accessing Discord with your cell phone, though I can't see whether you're on your cell phone in BOINC.  Regardless...

Do you have access to all of your computers through the cell phone?  Can you access them when you are 'out' and about?  And if so, what and how do you do that ?

99.9999% of the time, i do not access my systems from my cell phone.

I *can* though. I have an app on my phone called "Terminus" which is basically a terminal app for iphone. I imagine theres the same or similar app for android phones. i can ssh into stuff with this app. and type in the terminal using the phone keyboard just like you'd use a terminal session on your computer. but it's VERY clunky, and annoying enough that I just never use it and just grab my laptop if i really need to.

My phone does have a VPN app installed and configured, and I have VPN servers setup at my host locations, and my firewalls configured to allow such traffic. i basically only use the VPN app on my phone to access my home network for other stuff like my home server which has things configurable via webGUIs that are easy to access from my phone. I have the same VPN profiles setup on my laptop too.

If I'm expecting that I will need to access something remotely and I'll be somewhere without wifi access. I'll just give my laptop internet access via the mobile hotspot on my phone (which converts the 4G/5G service to a local wifi access point), then use the VPN on my laptop to access and manage whatever I need to that way.

Thank you Ian, that is informative but I think I'll stick to my own miserably simple ways.

Thanks again!

I see the announcement of

I see the announcement of Boinc 8.0.2

This is the page where the instructions for installing Linux starts with the button "Instructions for Linux".

I am assuming that it still installs everything in the various subdirectorys rather than "All-In_One" which I find to be massively more convenient.

Is there any major benefits to going with what I used to call "the repository" version of the Boinc system?

no advantage for us/our team.

no advantage for us/our team. don't attempt to upgrade or change things. you will inevitably break your system.

If desired, you can always

If desired, you can always just upgrade your All_In_One executables to 8.0.2.

For anyone who doesn't want to hassle with getting them from github, you can download them here. I try to keep this current, and it is extensively documented here.

If doing so, make note of ownership and file flags before you replace the current files (or save them in case) and adjust the new ones to match, as would be normal.

normal folks with a stock client can, but ours would need to be recompiled to preserve the "special bits" not available in the stock client ;)

I've been putting it off because I fear that the new BOINC versions are different enough that they are no longer a drop in replacement and i dont want to have to go through the hassle of fixing every little thing again (it's not my code, and the author is no longer around so I'd have to go through all the reverse engineering too). and there's no benefit for us really to upgrade just for the sake of it.

That is what I suspected.  And while my experience with those installs was "Ok" it was also really unhandy from my POV.  Don't really wish to revisit it.  :)
