It was rainy and windy all

It was rainy and windy all day and it's still raining and a little windy tonight, IAN came ashore about 77 miles South of me so no really big winds, some gusts probably pushed into the mid 60 mph range but all of the homes in my neighborhood are built to Category 3 standards and Ian was only a Cat 1 when it came ashore in Georgetown, SC. We had a LONG weather broadcast when radar indicated a water spout COULD be headed our way but after 45 minutes nothing was seen so the Weather Service cancelled the alert and all the local weather people got their bubbles burst!! They kept telling people to get to the basements, I live 1 1/2 miles from the beach and there are ZERO basements within 10 miles of me!!! Sometimes they really have no clue what they are trying to convey!! I am also 31 feet above sea level so any storm surge would never reach me so we are pretty safe here. Now the local beach dunes did get over run with sea water but that happens in a good rainstorm too, they blocked off all the flooded roads and all the tourists went down to take pictures of them, the Police chased them away.

I'm guessing you could be made an island however.  Storm surges are more like tsunami rather than tide, they can push miles inland.

As to tornado the weather people just read the same safety message that is read in tornado alley where every abode has an underground shelter.  Otherwise the message would be kiss your a$$ goodbye because you didn't evacuate and don't have a shelter.

Not me personally but yes it's possible, I'm past the Inter-Coastal Waterway which runs most of the the length of the East Coast and then I'm across a road and behind a shopping center.

Yes I agree but I was talking about the local weather folks just reading the same thing they would say for Oklahoma for example, one would think they could tailor the message for the communities they serve and not just read some stock print out. Yes they can read the print out but then go on to say whatever for us, they didn't do that and just droned on for almost 45 minutes.

So you live on a ridge line?  Or is there low ground another mile(s) farther inland behind you.  Not knowing exactly where you are so I can't look on a topo map.  Just a lot of that area has lots of rolling terrain and water fills in low spots from the rain, rivers and storm surge.

At one time in the US using the word tornado in a forecast was a firing offense.  They read the copy the lawyer has approved and can say nothing else.  Now if they can find a local official to tell what to do, they will run that clip over and over.  But never will they say it themselves, because they might get sued.

Here the local News, all CBS, ABC, FOX and NBC affiliates all let their own local people talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and and and and non stop mostly saying the same words in a different order so you keep hoping they will say something new. They keep showing the local doppler radar but since it was installed the trees have grown up around it and it's fairly useless in several positions of the compass. It will be 5 years before they get the new one built, on higher ground, with the latest and greatest stuff which of course will be outdated by the time it's installed!! The local News station are sooo small the ABC and CBS stations have the exact same people on them at the exact same times with the major differences being the Network shows and movies. Most of these people would NEVER make it in a bigger city, they are all based in Wilmington, NC which is about 40 minutes North of me up State Rte 17, and they each have their own quirks and are mostly right out of College and weather school.

I am thanking the early part

I am thanking the early part of this discussion where I stopped feeling so "dumb founded" by not getting "the links" between words.
