All of the Quad Xeon MacPros, even the $3700 entry-level unit, are way too overpriced except for the competitive folks, of which Zombie is a "proud card-carrying member"... ;-)

I have a large need for a system that can run Vista with multiple VMware guest systems so that I can start getting "experience" in doing stuff on Linux, Solaris, and FreeBSD. It is the way of things. People want their "free" Open Source stuff. If I am going to remain in IT, then I'm going to have to compete with India, which means I'm going to need to know Java/Linux, some Oracle stuff, Websphere, Apache, mySQL, myPHP, etc... It's all the rage here... Once the outsourcing (err, "rightsourcing") goes bust, people will be looking for natives that can bail them out of the quagmire...
In the machine's "down time", it would crunch BOINC projects...

Also my real "need" to compete with Zombie (or you) is somewhere on the order of 0%, as I do have the room on credit cards to buy 3 of what I posted, but the realization of how ridiculously overpriced your "bragging rights" systems are sinks in a bit...and the fact that I don't have a job...and the fact that I'd have the things repo'd from me when collections came... It all sorta loses its' luster...
2) Machines for my family, I'll buy from Dell, but I build my own.

While there is no Xenon with the same specs as the mac pro, there is an Extreme edition quad at 2.93 GHz and an unlocked multi for some serious overclocking. Once Intel releases their V8 platform this will be a moot point.

Who in their right mind would build a system (this powerful) from either of these two companies when one could build it themselves for a fraction of the cost.
Right. I built this machine back in march (2x X5355/4gb) for $3700 including tax and shipping. At this time, X5355s were $1,209 ea.. At the end of July, they will be $744 ea., and the X5365 will be $1172. I could have squeezed a few hundred more out of it by going with lower quality parts.

I know, nothing serious here. However, that dream machine you spec'd wouldn't be any faster than mine. I have 4gb, running BOINC on all 4 cores, and it's never gotten over 2gb usage. Perhaps if I was running 100% predictor, and if they were all on the same cycle where memory spiked at the same time across all tasks...

Superlink@Technion have a minimum mem requirement of 700megs, so a gig/core would probably be a good idée for that project.
CPDN are working on new models that need 1.5-2 gigs, and higher resolution once that need 4.7 GB, if they find hosts that are willing to run them.
