i play vinyl, and since i don't listen to any commercial music at all (that means anything that gets played on television or commercial radio), names become pretty meaningless on a list like this because i don't think anyone's going to recognise them, because a) you can only buy new vinyl from specialist outlets, and b) since my tastes are underground, that means that i'm about as diametrically opposite of popular music as you can get.
the downside is that you always have to be searching for new music (and occasionally going through and getting rid of some of the stuff you no longer play - we have over 2,000 record in our apartment) it's definitely an addiction. i spend a lot of time searching for new music. not a bad habit, and a lot better than watching tv :)
in my circle, we call popular music "the lowest common denominator"...
genre-wise, i'm playing uk decent vinyl grime/dubstep, plus the occasional drum 'n bass.
cd-wise, my top recent purchase has to be the absolutely outstanding dubstep allstars: vol.04 (you can actually find this cd on amazon)
check it out. you just might be amazed. and even if you don't like it, you will have one of the top uk underground dubstep cd's in your collection.
