I find it rather impressive

I find it rather impressive how fast my GTX660 chews and spits out SETI wu but I would rather be crunching Einstein on this platform. I have lesser platforms for SETI.

xfs tools are a nightmare. We have to add RAM and a swap disk to the server just to run the filesystem check!

I'm afraid this will take the whole weekend...

Just a few more details: *

Just a few more details:

* Upgraded from 16 GB to 24 GB RAM
* Added a 160 GB SSD just for swap
* We're now running the 4th repair attempt
* If a repair fails it does so rather late in the process (after a few hours)
* We don't expect that this repair will restore full performance, it's the first required step

Please bear with us, we'll keep you posted here...

12 TB is not a huge amount of data. May be it worth to move the data to another storage temporarily, then format xfs again from that scratch and move data back.
Meanwhile, errors may come if some disks have bad sectors and SMART haven't recognize them yet. So checking may result in an error again.

That's certainly one option we do indeed consider. We have a number of options and we'll weigh them carefully. Please understand though that we won't rush things - analyze, think, plan, act.

Thanks for your patience,

How about considering ZFS ? This is not a troll, but a serious question.

Let's not get too technical

Let's not get too technical here but ZFS on Linux isn't (yet) an option...

(update: fs repair done, fragmentation check running, we might restart parts of the project soon)
