[solved] nVidia 295.51 beta driver problems - Failed tasks - Cannot create a symbolic link in a registry key that already has subkeys or values. (0x3fc) - exit code 1020 (0x3fc)
Can we set up somewhere to reliably get the latest news about E@H and Nvidia drivers? I keep coming back to the forum and having to search, and get piecemeal information. It would be great to know there was a place I could just go and check periodically to see if / when the latest driver is available from Nvidia that fixes the problem...
What is WHQL? When was it fixed? Where do I go to get the beta driver? Any other steps necessary?
How hard would it be to put all of that relevant information in one place? Is keeping it randomly scattered through the forums really the right way to do it?
I am not a mod or admin, nor do I feel comfortable starting a thread in regards to this, as I am not a frequent cruncher here. However, it does appear to be fixed (I mainly crunch GPUgrid, and they were having the same issues)
1) A WHQL driver is a Windows Certified driver, meaning that it would be sent to Windows Update as an updated driver, and is considered the most stable, since it is meant to go out to EVERYONE. (I'm actually using a beta 301.25 that isn't even on their site yet for my 680, it was leaked, or pre-released)
2) STOP ALL CRUNCHING AND CLOSE BOINC BEFORE STARTING Go to NVIDIA.com, on the left side you will see a tab that says drivers, click geforce. On the next screen, on the left hand side you will see a clickable link for "Beta and Legacy Drivers", once that is clicked, you will be allowed to select your GPU from a series of dropdown boxes. Once this is done, a results page will pop up, allowing you to select 301.24 '
So far I PERSONALLY have not seen or heard of any issues in regards to crunching in their forums. IF YOU PLAY GAMES WITH OVERCLOCKED GPU's THERE HAVE BEEN ISSUES IN THEIR FORUMS, HOWEVER IF THIS DOES NOT CONCERN YOU DO NOT WORRY. (It was causing low frame rates during gaming for some people, again, GAMES ONLY for SOME people.)
Once the driver is selected, Run it, and I personally reccomend doing a clean install. If you have profiles created for your card, this will delete them!! If you wish to do a custom install, you may select that option as well, I personally do not use 3D gaming, so I do custom so I don't install the 3D drivers. After everything has installed, restart your computer.
3) It was apparently fixed in the 300.x series (R300), but as I've said, since a WHQL version has not been released, no one really knows about it.
@Dave: we do post such news here in our news section (which will be visible in the BOINC Manager notices as well) and you can follow us on Twitter. Everything else is kept in this thread - at least the Einstein@Home related discussion (I can't speak for other projects).
Please note, however, that we won't advice our volunteers to install beta software. That's ok for those who follow this thread and choose to do so but not for the average user. We'll post updates on this subject as soon as NVIDIA confirms that this issue is fixed and they've released a stable (i.e. WHQL) driver.
@ Oliver This is why I did not wish to start a seperate thread telling people about the beta drivers. Most projects follow roughly those same rules. "Yea, you can post about them (betas), and those that read it may follow the advice, but since drivers are serious business and no one knows how everyone's system will react, so a seperate "OFFICIAL" thread is not created."
BTW, I believe you guys probably have the best screensaver out of any project I've ever worked on. Whoever did it, did a fantastic job.

I think this is a case where you have to be careful to distinguish - both in what you say, and in the way that you say it - between 'information' and 'advice'.
I'd be happy to pass on information that a Beta exists, that it's received such-and-such a writeup (citing references), or even that I've tried it and "it works for me" [that's a general statement, not applicable to this particular example].
But I wouldn't advise anyone to do anything beyond reading the source material and making their own decision based on their own best judgement.
I'm going to GUESS that you did not care to read ANY of the previous posts, and merely jumped on the last one. Further, I also stated in that post clearly that they MAY FOLLOW the advice
If you HAD read the previous posts, you would have noticed the following:

2) A WHQL driver is a Windows Certified driver, meaning that it would be sent to Windows Update as an updated driver, and is considered the most stable
3) So far I PERSONALLY have not seen or heard of any issues in regards to crunching in their forums
4) 2 others have reported positive results from their own testing
5) Glad to hear that this one got fixed! I'll forward the positive test results to NVIDIA and hope for a final/stable driver release. Oliver
Sources were cited, the fact that it is not a WHQL was mentioned, as well as the definition, and since the definition of advice= an opinion or reccomendation, I would say all bases were indeed covered. I made statements in regards to the FACTS that this was my experience, as well as others, so this is not information, but advice from my OPINION as well as others.
Further, this statement, which you quoted clearly states that one should indeed be careful, "but since drivers are serious business and no one knows how everyone's system will react, so a seperate "OFFICIAL" thread is not created."
Oh, and it's not mentioned in the source material, since this bug only affected <.000001% of users (made up the stat to show NVIDIA merely does things as friendly nod to us BOINC users MOST people who use these cards do so for games, where it does not affect them) Their quaddro and tesla series use different drivers altogether. I gave friendly warnings in regards to betas, and why I did not post a seperate thread on this topic TELLING people to switch.
Again, these are beta drivers and not whql, im not going to be the one who says, "everyone should switch these immediately, etc." when drivers are serious business. I will give my opinion and experience that it seems to be fixed, but thats it.
And yes, I agree, when a WHQL is released, there should be a seperate "official" thread by a mod or admin. Neither of which I am, so I did not.
