Australia is a big country. I had some friends from Trieste who went there after last war, but at least one came back. No mountains. Instead others went to New Zealand and found a lot of them.

I would just like to pass this along.. My very together nephew just walked away from his last semester of grade twelve high school (disillusioned). He is now working on a organic farm startup and doing quite well. Of course! I ask why and he sent me this article
Schooling: The Hidden Agenda .

What Happened??? Did he fail the school system or did the school system fail him??

Society failed him. He looked into the road that stretched out ahead of him and didn't see anyplace where he could be fulfilled in today's society. In this he was probably not too far from being right. Even if you work hard and play by the rules you can find yourself not sharing in the dreams of having a good life, of not doing things that contribute to society. There is way too much emphasis on going to University and for some that is not the right path or looks, at the time as a waste of 4 years.

Schooling appears to many to have a hidden agenda but that is the cynicism of our time talking. It is the hidden destruction to the psyche that goes on when all you hear on radio and television is the naysayers peddling their own private view of societal hate. When politicians, businessman, and role models all appear to have feet made of clay it is the young that suffer initially. In the long run it is society that suffers because we lose their talent and imagination.

When I was growing up in the 1950s I had a "mentor" that I could go to and talk things out. (Parents never understand and besides they just try to impress their values on you.) But today, because of the way society has poisoned the minds of the young against becoming too close to someone older, young people often are left to drift for themselves, to not share their thinking and ideas with someone older and, as a result, make decisions that they may regret in the future.

I hope your nephew enjoys a full and productive life. There is nothing wrong with wanting to work on a farm. Just remember, it is his life and he is the one that will live it. Be supportive of his decision and NEVER let him think that you are disappointed in what he has done. Be open with him and talk to him as an adult. Provide guidance but only if he asks.

It is sad but I see so many youth that seem to be just wandering through life because they have no one they can trust enough so they can express their ideas.

I have seen on TV a serial on Australia's flying doctors. It is this the reason you are learning to pilot?

My favorite show growing up was the Flying Doctor.. I remember when I was young I wanted to grow up and be a flying doctor.. My mentor at the time was my family's minister 'Reverend Tide' who took me under his wing when my father died in an aircraft accident and he said you could also become a flying minister :-)

Thank you for your advice. I am confident my nephew Kirk will not let society's failures or anybodies failures get in the the way of his plans.. He has a good head on his shoulders.. When it all said and done he will probably be one the ones left standing :-)
