This might be subject to change, but some preliminary info to end speculations here:
Most likely S5R4 will start with Applications very similar to the last Beta Apps, i.e. SSE2 App for MacOS Intel, switching x87/SSE App for Windows, switching G3/AltiVec App for MacOS PPC (which will remain the slowest one in comparison), and an App that switches SSE2/SSE/x87 Apps for Linux.
The next improvements targeted for the Apps are getting the Windows App compiled with MinGW, so gcc-specific improvements could be ported to Windows (SSE2 optimizations), and, more general, get the "weighted" Hough code up to the speed of the currently used "unweighted". As the main improvement there is the prefetching, I'd suspect systems with a faster memory interface (AMD) to be a little faster in that part at the beginning.
However before that we have to get S5R4 running at all, and an almost equally high priority is a major server code upgrade. I doubt that any major work on the App code will be done before that.

Sounds like an awful lot of work to get done in a really short time. Is the S5R4 app going to be ready by Aug. 1 or should we expect some downtime? Granted, there will be resends on S5R3, but will we be seeing S5R4 data on/near Aug. 1?
Hopefully I havn't waited too long to do anything about this, but here goes...
I'm leaving in 7-8 hours and I'm going to be gone for 1 week. In the intervening time, I pretty much need my computers to just keep crunching along unattended. I'm currently running the 'power' 4.36 app on all of them.
I don't mind doing 'cleanup' work since I have high speed cable or dsl at all of them.
Does anyone here 'guesstimate' that I'll have problems getting S5R3 tasks for at least the next 7 days? From looking at the server status I'd tentatively say no problem, but it looks like not much longer than that.
I'D say: set your cache to (say) 5 days and that will ensure you get enough WUs before the pipeline dries out :-).
Not a bad plan, but I think that might cause some peculiarities with the other projects that I work. (Not to mention I'd have 5 days worth of every project... not just E@H)
I have at least 3 projects attached at every computer, so the odds of a CPU going completely idle are darn slim, so there's probably no issue with just 'letting them ride' while I'm gone.
I know you crunch on MW too. So given the sitch there with the new work, going to 5 days probably isn't too good an idea. Since you won't be around, if something screwy happens you won't be around to fix it and work could start missing deadlines. One of my hosts overran an EAH deadlines because of MW fallout, for example, but I got away with it. ;-)
I'd say just let them fly as is, since I doubt S5R3 will run dry before you get back.
set 5 days, force a manual einstien update, and then reset back to your normal level before your other projects help themselves to the longer queue as well.
(Kidding... I know you've seen the ugly side of when I get 'mah dander up' on their boards. Sigh... first time I've fed a troll in years though, so I guess I was due a good one)
In any case, I'm jumping in the car to leave in minutes, so it's too late to implement the suggestions, but I will keep any of them in mind for the future! :) If push really comes to shove, I can remote into about 2/3rds of my machines and alter settings that can't be dealt with via the web front end.
Thankfully I've stayed where I'm staying before and confirmed that they have good, free high-speed internet, so I won't be totally unavailable. I'm heading off to do a weeks training on some new systems with the Army (I'm Air Force though) and my poor young airmen get to stay in open bay barracks. Thank goodness for RHIP... I get a private room with free wifi. :)

No Problemo! I've been known to have GRRRRR moments myself. :-)
In any event, enjoy your break from the normal routine with the training sessions.
As far as BOINC goes... If you don't auger it in once in awhile, you're not trying hard enough. ;-)

We'll probably have a short downtime for the server upgrade, we don't know yet if we'll do this both in one rush at the same time.

Any outlook on the aspect of runtime uniformity across work units for R4?
