my initial thought with dual 2670 + GPU systems is the ability to diversify my contribution, AKA Iike the output and efficiency of GPU but also think lots of good science can come from CPU tasks. the 16 cores should be more than capable to run 2 cards at high output while maintaining a reasonable CPU presence.

The 1070's output more credit per day, at a Slight disadvantage in power right? I'm not so much the guy that wants to be number 1, but I do want to contribute as much as possible. essentially, multiple rigs dumping power towards science. The biggest thing right now though, it seems to be equivalent cost to build the dual xeon (ignoring power costs) as it is to build an i5 system. at least from my research. I'm happy to be wrong on this though. It seems to be around $1000USD to build any system before cards so really I'm looking for max contribution.

If I do switch to GPU rigs and CPU rigs, I would need equivalent power out of each category, because I feel strongly that ignoring CPU tasks is denying science simply because of RAC.

Again, maybe it's solely due to my limited systems, but I feel like the heat won't be as big of a factor for me, especially if I strategically place the systems to heat the house.

I have some 16 core systems, thru hyper-threading, and love them, my problem for them is they were bought 'off lease' by me so are Dell or HP systems which have tiny psu's so no crunchable gpu's in them. I do that with my other pc's that are 6 core AMD pc's and they have either AMD or Nvidia gpu's in them depending on what I bought at the time I was shopping. I run both cpu and gpu projects, but not the same project for both on the same pc, ie I will Einstein gpu units on my gpu but run LHC units on the cpu's. I always leave one cpu core free for the gpu to use, and for me whenever I use the pc for updates or whatever. I even keep a cpu core free on the 16 core pc's, that way it isn't running at 100% 100% of the time, close but not quite.

One thing I did that saved me a ton of time was to buy 120gb SSD drives for every pc, that way they boot up in a flash and are back to crunching much quicker after a reboot. 120gb works for me, I got off brand ones but kept the regular drives they replaced as my backups which I refresh every couple of months. I do a clone of the drive from one to the other so it's an easy plug and play if something dies. I don't worry about the Boinc units, someone else will crunch any I lose, but so far everything is working great! I am knocking on wood right now!!!!!

I bought quite a few APC units over the years, but they fell out of my favor about a decade ago and I've used CyberPower since.  I don't know whether that is a wise choice currently.

I bought a CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD a few months ago and have been happy with it.  It is one of there pure sine wave models and I haven't any problems with the computer loosing power during the switch over from wall power to battery power.  I use it for my main computer, which runs Windows 10, and the power management works great.  When wall power is lost, BOINC stop crunching and when it gets to 50% battery charge, the computer shuts down.  Where I live there is 1 or 2 power interruptions each month, so the UPS makes things a little easier.  However, I don't have a UPS on any of my dedicated E@H computers.  I would rather spend that money on a better GPU or my electric bill.

Amazon has a Tripp Lite

Amazon has a Tripp Lite 1500VA UPS on sale today for $120. Pretty decent price for a 1500VA UPS.

Okay, after, oh how many

Okay, after, oh how many days? my internet is working again Yell... I have a love hate relationship with my current house, in the middle of nowhere means i can do generally as i please, but I'm also limited to spotty DSL at less than 1meg.

also, I finally fixed VirtualBox hoping to get some Vlhc work, and now linux seems to be crashing on me again...

I need to collect my thoughts and I'll report back later...

alright. So. multiple room

alright. So. multiple room heating it is. that seems the easiest. I will be putting many (however many) into one room to limit ethernet length and because it makes sense to.

Thanks all for the input!

I had my handman run multiple

I had my handman run multiple lan connection through out the house when they were installing the insulation into the attic. I figure, why not.  Turned out to be one of the best decisions I made.  Doesn't mean there isn't a computer here and there with a 200 ft lan running along a baseboard somewhere, lol.. But for the most part, they are all in the walls.

That's funny...I'm buying a brand new home and they are running internet cables, Cat6 ones, into each room to cut down on the wireless usage by me. My wife likes streaming her shows and me using the wifi too causes buffering and that isn't pleasant!! I did Cat6 just so I don't ever have to replace them if something faster comes out.
