most people who are in “set it and forget it” type operations aren’t using an old GPU that has problems with the gravity wave application. Occasionally someone will make a post inquiring about why their old GPU doesn’t work and they are usually instructed to disable gravity wave in their preferences. Everyone else who doesn’t care what they crunch and just run default preferences, probably isn’t aware that they get 99% gravity wave tasks. As Keith pointed out, when you have both task types allowed, you will overwhelmingly get GW tasks over GR. People who know they have an older GPU that’s not compatible with the GW app or just want to crunch GR, purposely turn off GW.
Gamma Ray project in general is not in beta. However there is a beta version of the AMD/ATI gamma Ray application. If you have beta selected, you will be sent the beta gamma ray application. If you don’t have beta selected you will be sent the standard gamma ray app. The beta AMD/ATI application doesn’t work with older AMD/ATI GPUs. The standard application works fine for older GPUs.
If you’re unwilling to solo stake GRC in order to have better control of project preferences, then I would reference the BOINC Client Configuration link I sent in a previous message and add the appropriate <exclude_gpu> statements to your cc_config.xml file to prevent the older GPU from being used for Einstein at all. That way it will only crunch some other project, like Milkyway, while the compatible GPU crunches the gravity wave tasks you’ll be sent.
I would have thought there were a lot of people with oldish computers (not gamers or anything) that don't know much about computers and just stick Boinc on there.
As in my last post, it was mentioned that Einstein does block certain apps from Tahiti, so it can be done.
I have configured as you said for the PC with 2 GPUs. Gravity runs on the new one, and Milkyway on the old (and better DP) one. But the PCs with only an old GPU, I have no way of getting Gamma only. A local config would not stop me getting gravity, it would just never run them.

But I'd like to do Gamma on the AMD. Looks like I can't do that while running gridcoin pool :-/ Apart from the hassle of self mining, I'd have to invest $50 in it. It barely makes $1 a day! But, I have worked out it will pay for most 2nd hand hardware in 1.5 years.
