To each their own regarding

Message 20055 in response to message 20052

To each their own regarding the Seti effort.

I started this stuff over 4 and half years ago -- in Seti Classic. I started with BOINC SETI over a year ago. This spring I started adding in Einstein and then Climate. Over the course of the summer, when Seti BOINC was having more than its share of problems I shifted over my resource shares toward both Einstein and Climate. Overall I've got 40% in Seti, 46.25% in Einstein and 13.75% in Climate (that's the cumulative amounts). My current active shares amount to 31% in Seti,
53% in Einstein and 16% in Climate.

The thing is, with Seti Classic now shut down -- there are a LOT of new BOINC folks and most of them are (at least at the start) joining in via Seti BOINC.

So, on the assumption that folks joining there will also take advantage of the multi-project functionality of BOINC, I'd not be TOO harsh on Seti....

To All, I apologize. I

To All,

I apologize. I was going on bad infornation. I put it together like this - this morning, first notice I saw was a link on Seti to what I know to be a dev-only board - I check Boinc download page and there it says 5.2.10, just as it had 6 hours earlier when I had looked it over thoroughly, version details and all, so why would I re-read the version details - as the hours passed, I re-checked the download page umpteen times, nope, still says 5.2.10 until it changes to 5.2.12, never indicating 5.2.11 as the recommended version.

In retrospect, I think I used good logic on bad data and arrived at the wrong conclusion, and acted wrongly on it. Again, I offer my sincere apologies.

Well, it's been a long 18-hour day on the messageboards, and I'm going to go stand in the corner in contrition, hoping I can drift off to sleep as I ponder the balance of hurt and help I've given today, and how to improve upon it tomorrow. If you can forgive me, I could use a hug.

Michael

To each their own regarding the Seti effort.

Barry,

That's my feeling exactly. I'm not trying in the slightest to make converts to my point-of-view, just mentioning my assessment of my time with Seti. I cranked the previous incarnation of this computer for SetiClassic, starting 3 years ago next week, to the tune of 3148 results, nearly making the top 1% at the time, before I came to the conclusion that contacting ETI was a futile effort, given the enormous time/distances involved and the finite lifespan of civilizations/lifeforms. And in the infinitessimal chance that we did make contact, there would be many risks. We on this rock can't even get along with our own species, can't undestructively co-exist with our plant, animal, or mineral co-inhabitants. In what way, then, would we inflict ourselves on another sentient species? Don't we do enough damage in our own playground?

On the other hand, finding evidence that we are not the only sentients, ever, would have a profound impact, hopefully humbling us just a mite.

I think that the major, probably the only, benefit from the Seti project is the development of Distributed Computing, and I'd not dismiss that as trivial by any measure. When I spoke of "fool's work", I referred to my own expenditure of electricity, cooked CPU, attention, time diverted from entertainment or recreation, etc. I am not projecting that characterization upon those who assess their efforts differently.

Respects,

Michael

Have a HUG Michael! And come out of the corner. No hard feelings on my end. And you're too valuable around here to be stuck in the corner.

Hope you're having a good rest!

LOLOL, not yet (rest, that is - no rest for the wicked). I finished the apology post and saw the note from BarryAZ, whom I also respect, decided to clarify, at length, that point before it was taken as offensive, then saw that a poster I'd responded to on the Cafe board needed further help, it took overlong for my thoughts and the composition to gel, posted it, read it, went back and edited it for my bloodshot, far-sighted peepers' typos, and now here I am!

Thank you for the hug. It's no secret that you are possessed of a generous soul, that was more evidence to the fact.

Wonder if Stick had a good time at the football game - his Alma Mater, Georgia Tech, was playing it's arch-rival - hope they won.

I think tthat may be the little rush of NEW BOINC clients out for now with any luck the majority of people can now connect to the server, although I'm not willing to rule out another one just yet :)

As for 5.2.11 glad everyone has sorted that out in here now as it was just a typo mistake by Rom he forgot to link up 5.2.11 to the main BOINC site, don't blame him he must have been exhausted after working on 3 new BOINC clients

Im on the latest now and the view graphic bug has also been amended that no longer shows up

I know Michael knows the answer now (from a Beta App post of his):

And, I was up almost as late crying in my beer (then I ran out). But I'm over it now and in retrospect I can say it was a good game (only the wrong team won). Besides, it was a good diversion from here. I think I missed about 7 BOINC updates in the first quarter alone. ;-)

OK -- works for me -- I got to the top 500 over in SETI classic before I moved over to BOINC. I run a rather large farm of CPU's -- as much as anything to make sure they are solid for use by my clients, with others to provide test beds for providing support to my client base.

As I noted, I've moved more over to Einstein from SETI, then again, the Climate project is also one doing 'good work' -- though getting the current administration to believe results might be its own 'fools errand'. (sigh).
