For now I recommend to NOT remove the app_info.xml while you have tasks in progress with more than, say, 5% done.

I clicked on "Update Project", but it still hasn't downloaded the new app. I do not have app_info.xml on this computer.

the application version is 'attached' to the WU. As long as you process 'old' WUs you will still have the 'old' version...
