Next Generations's phasers reminded me more of a "dustbuster" then a weapon. Claeanup on isle 3...
Lol ! agreed )
BTW: Rob, I had one of those Air Force survival guns years ago ! Mine had a .22LR barrel on top and .410 shotgun underneath. It was made by Springfield arms.
Wish I still had it.

PS: Way to go Space X !
Bill,
That's the one. You are the first person I have talked to that any familiarity with this "piece of work". As a conversation piece I too would like to have one, but only to talk about. I did not know it was made by Springfield.
[EDIT] The 106 recoilless might provide a solution, but even its rear compensating pressure bleed off might not completely neutralize the forward component. Also it would be a bit of an overkill not to mention a logisticcal nightmare.
The Air Force did mount a One? megawatt Laser on a 747 which could shoot down a scud missile in flight.
That's what you need for space station defense !
Unfortunately - that might require a considerable amount of solar panels
to power it up !
Yesterday, I went to see the new Star Wars movie. Then I came home and watched Star Trek: Into Darkness on TV. In one or the other of them, I was a bit nonplussed to see someone firing a rifle-style energy weapon and having the barrel rise about 30 degrees after each shot like a projectile weapon (a gun as we currently know it). I would not expect a pure energy weapon to recoil. I thought this was either poor acting or poor directing.
Star Trek weapons seem to be getting 'wimpier' and more politically correct with each passing decade. Back in the 60's - if you got hit by a handheld phaser,
you were most likely completely vaporized ! The latest ones seem to have approximately the same power as a .22LR round .
The 'Norelco Shaver' type phasers carried by the Next Generation crew were still pretty powerful but - only if they cranked them up to Level 15 or so )

It was established in "Aquiel" that TNG phasers were stored at a low power setting and had to be manually set if a higher level was needed. This was just a policy thing, not a technological issue.
The small Phaser I disappeared from TNG simply because the producers thought the II was a better prop. They didn't like the way the I could disappear in an actor's hand. About the only time one appeared after season one was when Wesley set one on automatic to distract the crew while he was running from them in "The Game." Oh, and I think Riker had one in one of the scenarios in the holodeck in "A Matter of Perspective."
What I never understood was why they always holstered their phasers before beaming down, even if they knew they were going into a hostile situation and there was no need for a non-threatening first impression.

No you couldn't have them take tactical positions with everyone facing out, weapon at the ready. No that would be too much like reality. That and an admission the big bad federation might get clobbered.

Savage arms produced their Model 24D which had a .22Magnum Rifle round on top and a 20 Gauge shotgun underneath, A simple selector choose which barrel was fired by the standard hammer. Mine is a gorgeous with wood stock and simple iron sights on top.
The rifle can drop a deer and the shotgun great for other game dependent on the shot shell employed. With a 20 Gauge you pretty much have your choice Birdshot, # 6m or even 00 and slug. Finding ammo nowadays may be tough...
