Hoookay..

This is on an Intel Mac. Never seen this before in all the years I've been running BOINC, and I've already reset my project several times.

It's probably server side bug?
They enabled this AltiVec feature 10 days ago:

* There is still an issue

* There is still an issue with CUDA Apps for Linux & Mac OS X, so even the new BRP3 application will only have CUDA Apps for Windows.

* If no work suitable for a client request could be found, the message system of the current BOINC scheduler sends notification about the last plan class that was checked, which on Mac OS X is the AltiVec plan class.

I agree that in many cases (including the current one) these messages are misleading, but so far neither we (E@H) nor David Anderson (BOINC) could think of how to change this, i.e. which message to send when so that it would be helpful. In the next generation of the scheduler we'll probably keep these messages only in the scheduler logs and don't send them out to the clients.

But what kind of Mac and which OS X version?

According to Bernd Machenschalk, project developer etc, posted here:

Quote:

G4 and G5 Macs running Mac OS 10.4 or 10.5 should now get the 7.06 AltiVec App with new work. Note that with Clients prior to 6.2 you need to reset the project to get the new app version.

Edit: Wooh, oops. Bernd was here already, while I typed my post. :)

Okay, thank you Bernd, that answers my question. So I guess I may as well switch my ATI 5870 back in because my nVidia 8800GT isn't doing anything for BOINC and it doesn't look like it will anytime soon.

Ageless, thanks for the link to the other thread, it will be great news to see my G5 will finally get to stretch its Altivec muscles! Wow, 30% better efficiency! After years of knowing the potential of the Altivec and now finally seeing it being taken advantage of, it's like a holiday present for us old PPC holdouts.
