Actually, it is ok to talk about it here as it's thread titled "GET "PAID" TO CRUNCH FOR SCIENCE RESEARCHES -> GRIDCOIN" It's a message board for all things to be discussed :)
The thing is, Gridcoin ISN'T like you and me Mikey. They are paying people to crunch. There's a financial incentive.
We donate our time and money as volunteers without financial reward. Volunteer generally suggests that people don't get paid for their time/effort. Are you not concerned that your team will not be able to complete against the like of Gridcoin pools one day?
I've thought about the situation you mention in regards to yourself and it's true that in terms of statistics, those with the most money to throw at the best hardware or those with access to the resources (ie universities, business) will always win statistically.
There's nothing wrong with having star performers like yourself for other contributors to look up to but I still don't see it as being on the same level as Gridcoin...which is basically an account manager.
The words volunteer and team don't really come to mind when I think of grcpool.com.
Why did BOINCSTATS separate ASIC stats from non ASIC stats? Because of the hardware?
What's the difference between that and separating out pools that offer financial gains? I'm not suggesting BANNING Gridcoin, I'd just like to see it separated from the stats.
All said and done though, science is the big winner.
When you put it that way I see your point, they aren't "volunteers" in that sense of the word as they do get paid to be on that Team, but on any other Team they would not. That does make GridCoin standout from the rest of the Teams.
The benefit is that Gridcoin does attract more people to BOINC via paying them to use their PC capacity and that's a win for BOINC. A lot of people on "team" Gridcoin probably wouldn't bother otherwise.
I think of Bitcoin Utopia though. People like yourself could have made a TON of money with your ASIC hardware but chose to donate your money via ASIC devices and electricity to mine Bitcoin and donate them to various causes. Money that was spent to upgrade the BOINCSTATS HDD's for example.
THAT is highly commendable and more in the spirit of a true volunteer :)
Have a good day...the weekend is almost upon us once more :D

Yes we donated to several stats sites, several other projects i.e. MilkyWay, SRBase etc and even to Boinc itself, thru Seti, so the developers could get something for their time spent, new software etc. But that is all gone now as the person running it quit and no one else wanted, or was able, to take over. I still have my hardware and am considering doing it for myself and may yet after the recent price jumps, but haven't as of now.
But as you well know the credits awarded were part of the downfall of Bitcoin Utopia, they gave out tons of credits, actually less than what the Boinc Developers projected than they should have been giving out when they ran it thru their formulas, but soooo many people complained that it got to be a pain for the person running it to listen to it EVERYDAY day in and day out. The same kind of arguments were made when we first started using gpu's instead of cpu's but the projects just stayed with it and here we are today with both happily coexisting. One thing that did help during the gpu phase in was that the Developers chimed in to publicly say that the credits were being awarded correctly, they never did that with BU, that was only done on the BU message boards and thru some emails.
I used to BOINC a long while back and have recently got back into it through Gridcoin. I'm still learning much of the technical side of Gridcoin, coding and such, but have been following with interest.
One main drive at the moment is to actually get rid of the team requirement, we don't want people to have to be a member of the team to get rewards.

I think GridCoin would grow quite a bit if you guys could do that!! I've been on my Team for a LONG time and I'm not leaving it but would love to make some money crunching.
Hello all, not much of a poster but thought I would chime in on this one. I think the idea of gridcoins is a very good idea much like Smileycoin is used for educational encouragement of young students.
Gridcoins have already brought a fresh new wave of crunchers, albeit with different reasoning for the crunching. It still serves the purpose of amassing large amounts of computational power that small projects and research Labs would never be able to achieve with their limited grants and funding. Especially now when the governments and educational institutions of the world are tightening their belts and cutting funding to almost everything out there unless of course it suits a commercial need like a new erection pill, a cream that takes off toe warts or a nostril spray that makes people feel good about their horrible selfies they post constantly.
Gridcoin has also brought back some of the people who have forgotten about it. I've always been chugging along and never had any great computers. Most of mine were Borgs at best and did not always have the time or the motivation. Life gets in the way a lot of times.
I did not like the team joining thing as I have always crunched solo, but I do think it could serve as a cornerstone of a future research currency that would allow labs to trade and barter their own computational power for resources from other labs or other educational institutions. As a reward to facilities that load it as screen savers on low power, ect, ect.
So with the thought in mind that after all these years of crunching I never expected to make one redcent, never bantered it about as a "Hey My CPU is bigger than your flacid cpu", why oh why did it bother me so much about giving my RAC to some strangers.
"So F@%k it, ...false pride...I let it go..", my RAC is still helping the Grander Schema. I also believe the reasons why even if some seek to profit, the good out weighs the bad.
The bad--- accepting the fact that we the alturistic dreamers are a minority, and most people only something if there is something in it for them.
The good-- we the human race get to build maps of the galaxy and beyond, probe the mysteries of life it self, and maybe.. just maybe one fine day in the middle of the night no one will ever again have to pick up with tears flowing the crayon drawing that fell from the child who drew it as she died of cancer while she slept..... ever again.
All right the last part was a bit much. Point made, yes..the upside out weighs downside
Cheers SuPerC
Disclosure- I have made about $8 at current prices if I were to sell them. So not gonna get rich but might buy a new printer ink refill kit someday
"Unfortunately due to the distance of this workshop I am unable to attend but I'd like to raise a topic for discussion please. In a word.... GRIDCOIN.
I consider Gridcoin to be an anomaly which needs to be dealt with. The offer financial incentives and "pools" of PC's which is distorting the statistics of individual contributors.
Much like the way BOINCSTATS separates "ASIC" results from "NON ASIC" results, I think something similar should be considered for Gridcoin.
Sports, financial markets etc are usually put into different categories or divisions. Gridcoin is like a Heavyweight boxer versus a lightweight when it comes to competitiveness. It isn't a level playing field for BOINC contributors who are not using PC pools OR being provided a financial incentives.
GRIDCOIN makes huge contributions to BOINC results but it should be separated from the statistics. I feel that GRIDCOIN could undermine the competitive aspect of BOINCSTATS and erode people's desire to climb the ladder stats if they can't compete against the GRIDCOIN juggernaut."
I see Gridcoin as an anomaly in terms of stats. I'd like to see something change.
I agree 100%. FAH has something similar on their EOC stats. Google and PS3 teams were split away from the real teams. Google/PS3 teams were the defaults when someone ran FAH at default with the Google toolbar or on their PS3 w/o changing the team. They blew other teams away. Google is actually still split along with Default (anonymous).
