Perhaps you're right - but it's been going on now for 2 days and I can't any work done because almost all cycles are being used up! I reset preferences to 40% of CPU for both Einstein and SETI to see if it makes a difference. But I was under the impression if I set 80% for each but only gave each 50%, that neither would exceed 40% if both were running. Guess that was a bad assumption?

You can't set percentages for each project. You can only tell BOINC to load your computer to a specific overall limit. And that throttling mechanism is not very sophisticated, because it can't use operation system specific features.
In your case, I would propose
Quote:
On multiprocessors, use at most 1 processors
Enforced by version 5.10 and earlier
Use at most 100 percent of CPU time
(Can be used to reduce CPU heat)
Enforced by version 5.6+
in Computing preferences. That way, you also avoid the problem of frequently restarting tasks that is sometimes caused by throttling. The tasks of your two projects would no longer run parallel but alternating, but you would have an overall system load of 50% and no problems with heat and/or response time.

Gundolf, I think Don was talking about the resource share % for each project. In other words he is saying... a resource share of 50% for each of his 2 projects and a throttle set to 80% should give 40% of CPU time to each project.
Don, the rest of Gundolf's advice is good. The throttle doesn't work very well. Set the throttle to 100% and use at most 1 processor.

Appreciate the replies. I've settled on allowing 80% total CPU use with each project getting 50%. No problems since starting this arrangement.
