Dear all,

Thank you all for your help on that matter, really appreciated.

I believe the Radeon R5 240 would be a good candidate for what I'm trying to achieve:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radeon_Rx_200_series

- GCN 1st gen

- Compatible with double precision

- Comes in 1GB or 2GB RAM versions

- Low TDP (30W)

- PCIe 3.0 x8 (max data rate at 7.8 GB/s, i.e less than the max data rate of PCIe 2.0 x16 (8 GB/s), so less likely to oversaturate the bandwidth).

Opinions ?

Best regards,

Samuel

If you haven't acquired one yet, I would get a 2GB version.  Plus, in Einstein, GPUs don't take up any bandwidth to speak of (at least for mine).

Dear all, @GWGEORGE007:

Dear all,

@GWGEORGE007: I'm unable to find any 2GB model at the moment. If I were to buy a GPU with only 1GB of RAM, would FGRPB1G still work ?

Another option would be to buy a Radeon R7 240, which comes in either 2 or 4GB models:

Can only comment about Nvidia

Can only comment about Nvidia hardware as no experience with AMD gpus.

Maybe someone with direct AMD gpu knowledge with the FGRPB1G tasks will comment.

Here with two tasks running concurrently I am using a smidge over 2GB of gpu memory.

So right at 1GB for a task I presume.

Think it would be tight with just a 1GB card.

Your guess of the Radeon R7 250 2GB model would probably fit your needs.  Enough memory, FP64 support, low-profile and pulls power only from the PCIE slot. Here is a 240 for example.

VisionTek Radeon R7 240 SFF 2GB DDR3

or this Dell 250 on eBay. Dell AMD Radeon R7 250 2GB PCI-E x16

or Newegg Dell Radeon R7 250 Low Profile 2GB GDDR5

I would definitely stay away from the 1GB GPU, whatever model.  You could go for a 2GB, and 4GB would be better yet providing you can afford it.

My suggestion would be to follow Keith's advice.  I also have no experience with AMD GPUs.

Dear all,

Thanks again for your help, really appreciated :)

Just bought a Radeon R7 240 off eBay at 45€ including shipping from Italy.

Let's hope this one works correctly with Einstein@Home :)

Dear all, Just to let you

Dear all,

Just to let you know that I received the AMD Radeon R7 240 this morning, and it's working correctly :)

I believe it's running FGRPopencl1K-ati 1.18 at the moment, with the AMDGPU driver:

Hi all, The recent

Hi all,

The recent shortage on FGRPB1G tasks got me thinking: what other application(s) could I run on my GPU (AMD Radeon R7 240 from ~2013) ?

So far I had only luck with FGRPB1G tasks. I had a quick go with BRP7 but it didn't work out in the end (I'm using Mesa OpenCL 1.1, that could explain why).

OpenCL 1.2 got merged in Mesa back in 2020, but I couldn't get it to work:

https://www.phoronix.com/news/Mesa-20.3-OpenCL-1.2-Clover

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/issues/4452

Do you have any experience with Mesa and OpenCL 1.2 ?

Thanks for your help :)

Cheers, Sam

Mesa OpenCL is generally

Mesa OpenCL is generally regarded as unworkable in BOINC.  Using the standard manufacturer sourced driver versions of OpenCL is expected and works the best.
