I think you are. I have never seen that hat on Gary's head. ;-)
Gundolf, thanks for your comments.
Initially, I thought Dana was talking to me but the reference to 'bourgeois' leads me to believe that his reply was directed to Mike.
@Dana, it is useful to reply to a message rather than the thread as a whole even if you don't wish to quote anything and you end up deleting all the quoted text. That way, your message will unambiguously point to the person/message that your comments are intended for and others wont be confused about who said what to whom.
Also, you need to be mindful about 'pushing your luck' too far. I'm happy to acknowledge that I may have unintentionally caused you some upset but that doesn't give you the right to issue thinly veiled insults under the guise of some sort of 'everybody is out to get me' attitude.
You've been allowed a soapbox from which to air your grievances and it's now time to move on. Personally I hope you will choose to continue active participation in this project and on the boards as well. But you really do need to get over your incorrect perceptions of how things are run around here.
This post is a general broadcast to any and all. No especial target, no personal implications ......
It's a perennial problem trying to engage online without context loss and sliding of meaning :
- normal human interaction is funneled to glyphs
- we lose intonation and pace of voice
- no non-verbal cues arrive ( collectively called 'body language' )
- generally things like whitespace, capitalisation and punctuation are the only layer above pure language constructs that we can use effectively to tailor delivery. Tools like BBCode are a real boon.
- communication, even allegedly within the 'same' language, is particularly culturally based. For instance a given phrase may be perceived disparately as either 'clipped/impersonal' or 'effusive/verbose' depending on whom is asked to interpret and thus their personal background.
- even silence ( no reply ) itself can be 'read' many ways!
- simply the length of the reply may impact matters. A long reply may be seen as either 'lecturing' or 'helpful' or 'waffling' or 'complete' or 'irrelevant' or etc ..... largely dependent on ( frequently undisclosed ) expectations. One could see how this would be especially my greatest dread as I craft a reply. :-) :-)
- we can effectively push the 'right' or the 'wrong' buttons on each other without the slightest clue it is happening at all. We are simply not all the same and our pure online interaction grossly hampers accounting for that.
Was it in one of the Hitch Hiker's Guide to The Galaxy series where the phrase "I seem to be having this tremendous difficulty with my lifestyle" slipped through a wormhole and wound up starting a war? :-)
Cheers, Mike.
( edit ) This is one reason why I chose a quizzical, and hopefully harmless, looking plasticine character for my avatar. Plus I like Wallace and Gromit! :-)

Just when I thought I was out... they pull me back in (Godfather III)
Please, do tell how things work around here. Wait, you don't wear that hat.
How ever you see it, I can tell you that it's doubleplusungood if you can have a go at me, claim that you didn't, and also claim that even if you did it's for the greater good since the Lurkers might act on some wrong idea. I do not believe I am so thin skinned that I can not let some perceived slight just stand on its own merits so my answer must lay elsewhere.
Since I cannot seem to control my wrong urges in this situation I must endeavor to work harder but I admit, I'm just not up to this particular challenge. I believe I will once again regain my more natural, cheerful attitude about this project if I just skip these message boards altogether. Which is sad because I may have enjoyed trying to help others as I myself have been helped along and to repay my debt to those who have already helped me.
Along with the golden rule, (not to be confused by math majors with the golden mean) there is your interpretation for silence Mr. Hewson, again with my apologies. This is not the first time I've failed to get a joke though I would hazard a guess there are more than some who agree with its literal interpretation. Since you seem to be particularly fond of quotes (as am I) I will add one in your honor. It is one that adds some conclusion to this thread for me though its tone is a bit too serious for my tastes. I chose not to put much effort in retrieving the perfect quote. I would definitely lighten it up though I did have something in mind when I chose the work it came from. "Among other things, you'll find that you're not the first person who was ever confused and frightened and even sickened by human behavior. You're by no means alone on that score, you'll be excited and stimulated to know. Many, many men have been just as troubled morally and spiritually as you are right now. Happily, some of them kept records of their troubles. You'll learn from them - if you want to. Just as someday, if you have something to offer, someone will learn something from you. It's a beautiful reciprocal arrangement. And it isn't education. It's history. It's poetry." - Catcher in the Rye

As you indicate, you do need to sort out your personal sensitivities. There will be no further warnings.
Cheers, Mike.

You could simply put Mike and Gary on ignore in your forum preferences. There's nothing in the rules that says you cannot do this, and since these forums aren't based on phpBB that's perfectly possible here (unlike in phpBB where it isn't possible to put moderators/administrators on ignore).
Of course, afterwards, you will have to learn to stay away from the "click here" link on their posts. ;-)
