RE: Well, I'm not quite

Well, I'm not quite seeing how a major hardware failure of one of their newest servers has much to do with censorship, or mismanagement of the project. IINM, the Master Science Database is single of point of failure problem for just about all of the projects, including this one.

The main reason you can't get to the site is because people have not bothered to set their hosts to stop pestering the scheduler for work that just isn't there to give.

Which beggars the question...why?

Offhand, I'd guess it's because they cost tens of thousands of dollars. ;-)

The current equivalent backup for Thumper (Sun Fire X4500) over SAH is about $50,000 plus list.

As far as getting through to report the the work you have left goes, most likely due to the nagging from the out of work hosts the backend LAN bandwith and other resources are getting eaten up, slowing everything else down. I also read that Galileo had a hardware failure which killed all scheduler contact for a while.

Oh, it turns out Thumper is a Sun Fire V40z with 2 dual core Opterons. Someone over there must have been looking at the 'wish list' of the current generation mid level Sun's when they mentioned the X4500.

The V series Sun Fire's are still available new and are in 10 to 20 K-buck class in basic configurations. A lot less of an ouch than the X series, but still far from pocket change.

LOL, that's one positive way

LOL, that's one positive way of looking at it.

BTW, I was right the first time Thumper is an X4500. Jocelyn which is the BOINC Database Server is a V40Z.

They've been adding so much new stuff lately it's getting hard to keep up with it.

For all who may not be

For all who may not be aware...

To all interested in the current censoring issues at Predictor, an online petition has been created for user’s who do not agree with the censorship. The letter is available to read before signing and will be presented to staff at the Scripps Institute to express the feelings of the Boinc community who feel the censorship is wrong and should be addressed.

We need as much support as possible, thank you.

Link to online petition.

When I tried to get this done

When I tried to get this done back when this first started happening a long time ago, no one listen to me. Now that it is more widespread, my tale has been all but a memory.

I may, or may not sign this petition, but I think it needs to be seen by more than just staff at Scripps. It needs to be sent to all companies that are listed as a support for this project. The companies that give their money, time, etc. to this project need to know it could fail, because the administrative staff has decided to throw away the people who volunteer for this project.

It's a mess, and I am never going to have a machine on that project ever again, even though I am less than 2K away from 50K (a goal I would have loved to reach).
