What year is this, still stuck with 32-bit programming. Time to move forward, 64-bit system have so many advantages. Not the least of which is more memory, etc.
If I was using 32-bit I would be wasting a lot of memory. I have 4 GB on this machine and my GTX 260 has almost 896 MB. Many have even more RAM that I do.
Have you actually checked how much memory is used by Einstein, before you made this unsubstantiated comment? All of 200MB per task. Does that warrant a 64bit programming style? No.
It won't speed up anything. Plus you'd run the chance of alienating a lot of people out there who still use perfectly fine 32bit architectures. Whereas 32bit can run fine on 64bit systems, 64bit won't run on 32bit systems. Programming for both architectures, while the 64bit version doesn't give any speed-up or other benefit at this project is just wasting good money and time.
I am running 6 projects, two at the same time on my 2 cores (Opteron 1210) with 32-bit SuSE Linux 11.1. Only AQUA, which is multithreading, takes 2 cores. Right now, running SETI and CPDN, 62% of my 5 GB are free, 24% are disk cache, the rest is used by applications and disk buffers. No swap is used.
