I never understood the difference between a Pentium and a Xeon. Is it simply a marketing stunt or is there a real difference? Same question for the Opteron/Athlon couple. I have bought a SUN WS with an AMD Opteron 1210 while most of my AMD powered wingmen have Athlons.

At least as far as the Socket 939 line, the Opteron processors had a little bit better wafer / substrate / SOI technology in use, so the voltage to run the same clock speed was a little bit less. Also I know that Opterons (at least then) shipped with a better "stock" cooling solution (heatpipe heatsink vs. standard heatsink).

Beyond that, not much is different from what I can tell...

My Opteron is running 24/7 since January 30 and I have no AC, with no problem. Also because the airflow in my SUN WS is good, as I have explained in my previous post.

I bought a s939 4400(?) and it had the copper heat pipe cooler, the 3800x2 it replaced only came with an aluminum one. didn't matter to me since I used a waterblock too keep cool but...

Mine Opteron has a copper

Mine Opteron has a copper heat pipe cooler. I just bought a second 160 GB SATA hard disk made in China for Hitachi and I am going to install it. It cost me 47,5 euro.

That may have have been near the end of the 4400 run... At one time the X2 line only got the standard aluminium heatsink... I remember because I was debating getting a 4400 or a 175, and the better heatsink was something I was considering... That said, I ended up just getting a Thermalright SI-120 heatsink and put off getting a dual-core...which now I can't honestly afford...

I bought my X2 4400+ in Jan. 2006 and it was delivered with a copper heat pipe cooler too. Price was more than 500 € and with the fast apps from Akosh, this host was even the fastest host at E@H for a few days.

I don't own it any more, but it's still crunching for E@H. :-)
