I have no doubt that what you described works at any location so long as you can control all relevant parts of that network.
At my location I have a similar setup. I only expose my VPN though, as I have absolutely no faith in the security of any 'internet of things' devices. Generally those receive no firmware update at all and get shipped with many serious security issues. So I block my IoT devices in my firewall and only grant them local network access. I can access them from everywhere, but they can't be by accessed by anyone I don't authorize.
From my receiver, not so smart TV, IP camera etc. Did you know that even if you buy an expensive TV you get extra commercials and your viewing habits are being collected? I simply block it in my firewall.
