What IO do you need in particular ? I use EPYC as my workstation. with a ROMED8-2T motherboard
sound outputs via the video card, but PCIe AIC sound boards are ubiquitous if you so desire.
USB ports are a little slim, but there's at least 2x rear for KB/mouse and 2x USB 3.0 and USB-C available via front panel headers, additional USB AICs are just as ubiquitous.
7x total PCIe x16 4.0 slots to add in whatever device you might want. way more slots and PCIe IO than any TR (non-Pro) or AM4 boards offer.
Vendor locks - permanently fused links no less - allegedly for the benefit of security against 'malicious firmware' ? I've never heard of this issue. While I build my own systems, I can't remember the last time I did a BIOS update. Ongoing benefit to the system vendor is obvious. And here was I thinking of getting an AMD processor in the near future - I may wait & see now, or go Intel.
Cheers, Mike.
I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

If you just stay away from the Dell and Lenovo prebuilt systems, then no worries about vendor locking.
Or just purchase a bare tray processor that hasn't been installed anywhere else and no worries about a vendor locked cpu.
You only get in trouble trying to wrangle a low priced eBay cpu that you don't notice says it is already vendor locked. There is a reason why they are low-priced because they only work in the systems they were originally installed.
Now have to find an am4 motherboard that can house 4 gpu's, 2 WU per GPU, and would be a beast.
There are socket am4 MB's that will run 4 or more gpus.
The hitch is you need to get reliable riser kits for most of them because the slots are 1x. The MSI x570 Godlike will allow 4 full-length ribbon cables or if the gpus are narrow enough 1 or 2 slot versions you could put them on the MB. The slots are strick 2 slot spacing.
My own experience with using riser kits with BOINC crunching was "unreliable" in the long run. But others have reported successfully running them.
If you are not seeing much benefit from a giant cache for CPU processing I like the Ryzen 3700x. It is a nice low-cost (used) 8c/16t that activates the x570 features. (Pcei 4/Gen 4).
I am having pretty good luck running Ryzen MB's with 3 long slots with 16x ribbon cables.

The wrx80 would be my main work & play platform so the IO requirements are a bit more then just a compute rig. Would replace my current trx40.
If i think about the IO its mostly lots of USB ports, and got couple of things that don't really like hubs in between like my audio interface and my HP reverb g2 headset is really picky with working on specific ports.
Also i need some Bluetooth and WIFI for connecting some things like noise canceling headphones. But if i take epic it already costs 2 slots with a USB expansion card and Wifi/Bluetooth card so that only leaves 5 slots remaining so not much better then the 4 i have now
Also having the Threadripper clocks is preferable since most performance scales linear with clocks, and i just like to tweak a bit more then EPYC allows.
But if its not here before am5 or next gen epyc i will let it pass because it would feel like old garbage technology at that point.
Hey tom, the whole ribbon cable story i also tried a while ago.
Tried a 8gpu build on my x399 with 2 bifurcated x16 slots to x4x4x4x4
Mixed success, becomes a bit voodoo magic if it works and when its not working its very troublesome to find out what the issue is.
Would love the godlike but its not in production/sale anymore in Europe. Maybe one day second hand because last retail price here was 750 euros, then the small step to the 1000 euro WRX80 is more than justified. Since having 24 cores or more is also really nice and have them maxing out during work regularly
Almost impossible to figure out since this project only lists the Top 50 in Computers. No other way to search through all the attached hosts to look for your 5900X/5800X3D comparison.

Do we have some run times for pure CPU WUs like e.g. FGRP5? I'm interested in comparing 5800X3D with 5900x
Milan-X CPUs will do too, but I doubt those fancy SKUs will appear on this project

I did. I accidentally acquired a 8 usb 3.0 to x1 card and have used it when I ran out of EPYC USB ports on the back of the MB.
