theres no such thing as a GPU that "doesnt play well with others", assuming you have two GPUs that are both compatible with the same driver version.
I hope that is true but my experience seems to indicate that some have hidden defects or I have had a long run of failed two gpu installs across several models and makes.
There in lies your problem - "failed two GPU installs across several models and makes".
As Ian said: "assuming you have two GPUs that are both compatible with the same driver version".
This may very well be what you are experiencing.
...just my 2¢
I was thinking the same thing, loading the software for a 2080 and then trying to use the same software for a 3080, or vice versa, seems to me to be asking for problems. I think Tom needs to get another gpu in the same 20?? or 30?? or even 2 in the 40?? model lineup should make for better compatibility. Years ago we used to load the software twice, the right version for each mode, when we had 2 gpu's in a system but I have no idea if that even works anymore as that was back at the beginning of using gpu's for Boinc crunching. We could even load both Nvidia and AMD software for each gpu if that was needed, but as I said I'm not even sure if that's a possibility anymore. Though I do have both AMD and Nvidia software loaded on a couple of windows pc's because I've had gpu's go bad and didn't uninstall the old drivers before installing the new drivers, I also have multiple pc's with more than a couple of versions of drivers on them as I've upgraded my gpu's over the years. BUT I have no clue if that would even work in todays Boinc, you would need someone to either try it or be alot smarter than I am to go thru the code.
I have had two rx 570's and now two rtx 3080 ti's that one card would not play well with others.

I ran across a used "NVidia P104-100 8GB MINING ONLY CARD similar to GTX 1070 TI" for $89
If I bought it, I would pair it with a gtx 1080 ti to bump that system's RAC to 2M+ and get it onto the top 50 at e@h.
Assume it won't crap out in less than 6 months. Is this a good bargain?

The same GPU is cheaper here ($62 with free shipping to US) and here ($50 without shipping). These are the specs according to techpowerup. Keep in mind it's only PCIe 1.0 x4 although that should not matter for BOINC computing and requires 1x 8-pin from the power supply. I would say, if it works, it is a buy in my opinion. According to the description in the first link, the card is "rusty".
Edit: Running the math on computing capability, specifically FP32 for the GPU you want to buy is 6.655 TFLOPS vs NVIDIA Tesla T4 from the hosts I run https://einsteinathome.org/host/13130311 is 8.141 TFLOPS. So you are looking theoretically at 81.7% of the performance of my host (check the runtimes). In other words the card you wanna buy is 18.3% slower compared to Tesla T4.

Thanks I bought one from he first link!! My gpu's are nowhere close to your T4 so maybe this will help move me up a little bit.
Rtx 3080 ti FE runs quieter and cooler than EVGA rtx 3080 ti px1 (slightly smaller than the high end EVGA).
Quieter - at 100 percent fans it doesn't howl (the FE).
Cooler - appears to be running 2-3C cooler. Maybe as high as 5C.
What did do? Straight slot swap between the two The FE is now closest to the CPU.
Proposal: the FE design is better for cheek and jowl Air cooled GPU setups.

Since I don't know what EXACT EVGA 3080Ti you have, is the thickness of the EVGA thicker or thinner than the FE version? If it is thicker, then when you swapped then with each other, the thinner FE has more 'breathing' room, hence it will get a bit cooler.

2080 and 3080 is fine. even 10-series and 9-series with the newest cards are fine because they are all supported by the same driver.
