what, exactly, does this message mean. The computer, (dual CPU, running 500 MHz each), is on ALL the time, is a spare computer so there is no other work done on it, and has a dedicated internet connection. This only started after the recent server problems. My other computers running the same client have no such problem. Is it a setting somewhere that has been changed?

strange message

and another thing somewhat related...the deferred connection time to the server has been slowly increasing, and unless I contact manually, can be as high as 30 - 40 hours between server requests. Is this related?

Something got screwed up in

Something got screwed up in your time stats in the client_state.xml file.

Let me poke around, I recently wrote directions for fixing this on another project, but I don't remember which one.

::sigh::

Too many BOINC projects...

And for your second question, yes. I do believe that you'll end up with an exponential back-off for this situation. With the 5.4.x clients, it could be up to a week. 5.8.x limits it to 24 hours.

[edit]Thinking about it now... since Einstein appears to be your only project, a quick and easy fix would be to uninstall BOINC, delete the entire directory, and reinstall. If you save the account_*.xml file (insert the E@H url as I'm too lazy to type it) you won't even have to go through the entire attach to project wizard. At the end of the install, when it asks if you want to launch BOINC, uncheck the box so it doesn't. Open the new BOINC directory and copy that file over then fire up BOINC. That'll automagically attach you (I did it the other night and it really does work).[/edit]

Thanks K. I will try that, or maybe just rewrite the client file.

OK... Found it. I had

OK... Found it. I had posted it over at NanoHive.

Disable network communications in the manager (so if something goes horribly wrong after editing the file BOINC won't try to report back to the server and you can restore from backup). Exit out of BOINC (file - exit, not just the red x). Make a backup of the entire BOINC directory before mucking with XML files.

Mistakes can lead to the trashing of your entire cache. The usual disclaimers.

Open client_state.xml with a plain text editor like Notepad.

Go down to the second major section (about 25 lines down or so).

It looks like this

0.953387
0.008927
0.989284
0.763435
1170469986.398377

I think the number you're going to want to change is on_frac. But it should be pretty obvious as to which one is wrong (as it'll say something like .076xxx). Change that to something realistic. If your computer is on 24.7, then it should be 1.000000. Make sure to have the correct number of zeros after the decimal (I'm not sure if you need them, some say you do, others say you don't. But most people I know recommend putting all the trailing zeros.).

If you don't see anything that looks out of bounds then don't change anything!
Just post back here those lines from that file and let someone who knows more than me take a look at it.

Save the file (make sure you don't end up with a .txt extension after the .xml) and then restart BOINC. As long as things seem to be crunching along normally you can go ahead and re-enable the network. You can then delete your back up.

If anything I said isn't clear then just don't do it. Post back those time stats from the xml file and let someone who knows more than me take a look at it.
