Cheers, Mike.

Elon also recognizes this I am sure. That why I believe that he will get SpaceX on Mars during his time. It probably won't be a man but it will be some sort of SpaceX creation. And that will be something to look forward to.

These are interesting things to ponder upon. Alot of what-ifs. FWIW a clear demonstration of autonomous facilities would be good ie. whatever Mars gadgets are needed for human life and safety.

Cheers, Mike.

( edit ) The next Cape launch is listed as a Delta with a classified payload ( US NRO ).

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

I really can't get sick of

I really can't get sick of these photos :

... the initial nett upward acceleration is about 1/5th of a gee, then rapidly rises over the first minute. There's a chap who has analysed this from the video feed :

{ This would be nett, so just before main engine cut-off the first stage was pumping out 5g .... }

Cheers, Mike.

( edit ) He was querying the throttle down some 30 seconds prior to maxQ. My guess is that is a true statement and relates to limiting vibration induced by plowing through the denser/lower air.

Interesting. Shortly after ignition the rockets first obstacle must be negotiated: A square formed by cables connected to the 4 lightening arrestors.

I agree. These images are always amazing. And there is always something new to see.

nominally 27 hours remaining

nominally 27 hours remaining to Thaicom-8 launch.

The hosted webcast will have lots of talking heads

the technical webcast will be much more cut and dried.

ASDS location this time is just a few kilometers farther downrange than last time.

In energy terms rockets are barely contained disasters, with the corollary that the closer to disaster you are the better the performance !

With the current launch window that will nicely fit at breakfast time tomorrow for me.

Cheers, Mike.

If they hit the beginning of the window it will be well in daylight at the cape, and late afternoon viewing time for me. Now if only they have something flying in the neighborhood returning live video--but that is probably hoping for too much.

Over at NSF they say there is an announced Main engine cutoff time 3 seconds earlier than the last flight. If that implied extra remaining fuel all gets used for extra re-entry burn it could make things appreciably less toasty on the way back than last time.

Well 3 seconds earlier on MECO gives another 9 seconds of three engine burn later, or 27 seconds worth of one engine burn or whatever .... you can see where they are going here to refine the margins for recovery plus re-use.

Cheers, Mike.

FWIW : SpaceX stats now puts

FWIW : SpaceX stats now puts :

- Eutelsat 117W B & ABS-2A launch on 17/06

- CRS-9 launch on 16/07

both from the Cape.

Cheers, Mike.

Some details Spaceflight101

I particularly liked

Quote:
Immediately after separation from the second stage, the booster will use its cold gas thrusters to flip around, pointing its engine section forward. A propellant settling maneuver will be made to ensure no gas bubbles enter the engines when re-igniting for the Re-Entry Burn. No braking/boost back burn will be made with the booster traveling on a ballistic arc until re-entry, creating a downrange travel distance of 680 Kilometers.

I like my rocket fuel, large, very cold, stirred and definitely not shaken.

looks like something is

looks like something is amiss. they have just reset the live stream to 1:31:45
