Does anyone know why the message portion of Boinc shows contact with the server reporting task complete, then downloads a new work unit and leaves the completed unit hanging around until later? Why not just go ahead and upload the result?

These are scheduled to not occur simultaneously, so as to spread the workload out for the E@H servers.

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

The result data is uploaded

The result data is uploaded to the Science server when the science app is done crunching with the unit. The result is written to a directory on the science server. This uses minimal CPU and no RAM.

The "ready to report" part needs to be written to a database, which uses CPU and RAM. Fine if you are the only person crunching for this project, but problematic when the project has a couple of thousand computers all wanting to do so at the same time.

(Just a more comprehensive answer to what Mike said ;))
