And some people are starting to get the little Windows pane down by their clock meaning they can pre-order their free copy now. I have one on my laptop but haven't gone thru the ordering process yet.
I also received the windows notification. Its about reserving your copy of win10 - they just want an email address so its pretty painless. When its ready you will be notified. Of course to receive this notification one must have registered their legal copy.
Win 7 Pro, registered, and received "Get Windows 10" icon in System Tray. :-)
I have to update my Win 7 Home Premium laptop, then check to see if it will get the new icon. Also, have to update my parents' systems and check them as well.
So, does anyone know how this upgrade is going to be handled? i.e., will there be an image that can be burned to a DVD, or will it be an install over the internet? Will it upgrade from Win X to Win 10? or will there be a need to do a bare metal install? I have never experienced a successful upgrade with windows "anything". All of my upgrades resulted in failure and/or an unstable Windows environment and a needed a virgin install.

People in Number Crunching, on SETI, are talking about it. It seems that it will download the upgrade to the hard drive, then install.
The first time I tried to upgrade was Win 95; and that failed miserably. (Ended up buying a full version copy and installing that.) The second upgrade attempt was from my Vista SP-2 laptop to Win 7 Home Premium. (x64 to x64) That SUCCEEDED!!! :-)
I would hope that before installing, that one would have the chance to move the Win 10 Upgrade from the main drive to an external drive; in case down the road it needed to be reinstalled. However; once installed, I would also hope that a new Recovery Disc Set would be able to be created, as well.

They are now saying that YES you can use the iso file you download to do fresh installs on brand new hard drives. MS is not saying, but some writers are suggesting, if you upgrade your pc you do it slowly so as not to go past the old too many things at once quota, or MS may say it's a brand new pc and make you buy a new license.
I do know when I first installed the 'preview' version I did it to a brand new hd with no problems at all, I unplugged the Win7 drive and plugged in a new drive and it's been running Win10 ever since. The Win7 drive is still in the machine, and still unplugged.

You only have to do ONE update to get the icon, it's #3035583, it came out in March and is in the 'optional' section of updates.
FYI: Windows Media Center will NOT be supported in Win10.
[Edit] Here is a link to Win10's FAQ.
It does appear as though you will have the ability to acquire and burn an iso image. It appears that on OEM computers the OS is locked to that computer whereas retail packages of Win are installable on any machine - no duplication of course.

I have an AMD cpu in my Win10 machine but also use an Nvidia gpu in the pci-e slot, I will have to see how it goes as mine has not updated yet.
