I was working at Kennedy

I was working at Kennedy Space Center when the astronauts died in the capsule. They played the audio recording from the capsule over the announcement system throughout the center. An awful thing to do.

Really? Awww ..... shute!!
This is in '67 right?

Fine men.

A particularly cruel & ironic end for Gus Grissom after the Liberty Bell fiasco.
A classic example of the results when the users don't/can't input to the design.

For shame ..... :-(

Cheers, Mike.

NB. It's wasn't only the pure O2, but also the fact of it's overpressure + inward opening hatch .... ( plus, as Frank Borman pointed out, not imagining the possible effect of that combination )

( edit ) Dark matter/energy should be seen not so much as 'truth' but a signal that our understanding of the cosmos lacks quite a bit. These concepts are labels representing gaps ( biggies!!! ) in our knowledge of the cosmos. View them as 'work in progress' signs! :-)

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

... and my other CPU is a Ryzen 5950X :-) Blaise Pascal

ouch! Jim McDonald, sorry to conjure up painful memories!

in spite of the past, i accept NASA's proof of dark matter without looking at it myself, i would not know the difference either way...

all those books for dummies on any subject were made for me :)

there is no such thing as NASA, there are just people, Murphy's Law, and the certainty that Maxwell Smart's 'old wooden shoe trick' will happen...

paranoia is a survival skill...

the failure of bona fide scientific and medical research to decode human behavior allows 100 million criminally insane people to go untreated...

do the math...it solves Iran in the 1970s, Iraq today, and ALL of WWII...

"The Link Between Galaxies and their Dark Matter Haloes"
To what extent does the surrounding dark matter environment shape the observational properties of luminous galaxies? In an attempt to shed further light on this question, I will present early results from a lensing analysis undertaken in the COSMOS field (Scoville et al. 2006). Weak gravitational lensing techniques have the unique ability to probe the full dark matter distribution and to reveal how galaxies are related to their dark matter haloes. Using the galaxy-galaxy lensing technique, I have mapped dark matter around an ensemble of galaxies and groups of galaxies within the COSMOS field. Using the exqusite ACS imaging to classify galaxies according to their morphology, I will show that the dark matter environment does indeed play a role in shaping the galaxies that we observe. Measuring this connection is not only a powerful test of the CDM paradigm, but also provides an essential ingredient towards understanding the physics of galaxy formation.

"A new force in the Dark Sector?"
The dynamics of dark matter is studied using the massive cluster of galaxies 1E0657-56. The velocity of the ``bullet" subcluster has been measured by X-ray emission from the shock front, and the masses and separation of the main and sub-clusters have been measured by gravitational lensing. The velocity with gravity alone is calculated in a variety of models of the initial conditions, mass distribution and accretion history; it is much higher than expected, by at least 2.4 sigma. The probability of so large a subcluster velocity in cosmological simulations is, following Hayashi and White, < 10^{-7}. A long range force with strength ~ 0.4 - 0.8 times that of gravity would provide the needed additional acceleration.

The NYTimes reports some new results coming from Hubble. I cannot link because a registration is required (at no cost). Viva Hubble!

i personally met John Glenn and was too scared to speak to him :)
i was with a group of friends and we did not all want to approach him;
one of my friends did go and talk with him, and Glenn was great!
