I found the default kernel in YAST and installed it. I now have it running and downloaded some more WUs. We'll see in the morning how this works out.
I sure hope this fixes it. Then I'll only have to automate it and forget about it.
I'll post back on how it goes.
That should fix it. The "Default" kernel has never caused a problem on either of my OpenSuSE boxen. (By the way, whatever happened to the guy who always used the word "boxen" in his posts?)
4 WUs later (10 minutes from a 5th) I'm without an error. This looks like it fixed it. Thank you very much. E@H can thank you for helping them get another happy cruncher. :)
By the way, what distribution would you recommend? I'm going to put something on an old 'boxen'
'Boxen' seems to be meant as the plural of 'box' (Dutch or German?) :-)

I know, the proper plural of "box" is "boxes". My "boxen" was in reference to a former Cruncher's Corner participant who always said that. Supposedly, he learned the word from an old Monty Python routine.

Ah, oh. That question again. I say that, because it always ignites a flame war amongst the hard-core fans of different distros. For example, I personally don't care much for Ubuntu, due to its poor quality control. But, most desktop users go with Ubuntu, and I'm not going to argue with them. In your case, if OpenSuSE works for you, I won't argue with that either, even though I get rather irritated with its quirks and the confusing mess that they call YaST. (The only reason I still run it is because I haven't had time to replace it with something else.)
What I always tell people is to try different distros, and just see what works best for them.
Then again, for me personally. . .
I like CentOS and Debian, because you just can't beat them for reliability and stability. They're not everyone's cup of tea, because their packages are always quite old, but that's fine with me.
For flexibility and cutting edge packages, I like Arch. It takes a bit more doing to set it up, but if you want a system that's completely customized to your liking, it's worth the effort.

I'll throw my love for Fedora into the ring. Though (soon) I'm jumping ship to a Debian based distro (aptsid). Fedora doesn't seem to want to play nice with my hardware.
Well, I think we can definitely sing victory after 13 successful WUs processed.
Going into Yast and doing the search for the default Kernel did the trick. It installed another two options default and default-failsafe to go along with desktop and desktop-failsafe,
No, unfortunately, this is a bit confusing ..... with "default" in its name.
Thank you Don! That explains (a) why I had a problem with OpenSuse some 6+ months ago ( I couldn't work out what I was doing 'wrong' ), and (b) why I now don't use OpenSuse.
Cheers, Mike.

My OpenSuSE 11.1 pae kernel is managing 6 Linux projects, a VirtualBox, a Solaris Express guest OS and a SET@home app on that. Solaris Express (SunOS 5.11) is leaner and faster than Solaria 10, on which the same app by Dotsch was very slow compared to the optimized app by Lunatics on Linux. Also another VM runs on VBox but I cannot talk about it, since it is an Alpha project.

There's been some discussion in the Linux kernel development community and there is a suspicion that this might already be fixed with a change submitted earlier this year, but not yet integrated into a stable release.
I'm not sure I have the time to verify that this particular patch does the trick to cure the problem for kernels that are configured to allow kernel preemption. So if anyone here is experienced with kernel compilation and wants to give it a try: you are sure welcome to do so.
