I was outside all day to finally light a large pile of maple branches and willow tree wood that I compressed into a 5ft X 5ft BBQ pit on fire.
And as usual I can't just sit and watch so I hauled piles of wood I had down in the opposite corner of the place using a goofy wheel ......um.....cart the wife bought from a "shopping network"........both tires were flat and I pumped them up and they went flat again but I used it anyway.
Took a few minutes to roast some Hebrew National hot dogs and also feed the goofy sort of wild mallards that were all around us begging for cracked corn,
Then did my own kind of "fishing" by using a rake with a long handle to pull up rocks from the bottom of a waterfall I have on the halfway mark of the creek that runs across the 5 acres.
No gold or diamonds yet and not a Rolex but this creek has been running for hundreds of years so something must be down there waiting for me to snag it with my rake
Of course after all that I hit the showers since we smelled like smoke......but as usual the smoke is coming in the upstairs window that I have open for these 6 Boinc Crunchers
So is the ultimate goal to re-release them back into the wild at some point or are they destined for a zoo someplace?
Indeed. The return program is graded ie. more room, less direct feeding etc. A regular rehabilitator is a friend of ours whose several acre bush property just be full of wombat burrows. Most times there will be several of various ages about cohabiting. So alot of examples and practice as it were. One crucial issue is at 18 months of age. The reproductive hormones kick in then, a bit earlier on average for the guys than gals, and from then on they progress to feral. They lose all prior tameness, cuddling and human sociability. Even to the point of aggression, biting and clawing etc of those they have known. That's a wee bit emotionally rough on the human carers who have been devoted to them, but that is the way of things. And if you think carefully that is the way things ought be. They are released to more of less within a few km of their known origin eg. at the same end, or side, of the valley. They are tagged and surveillance is ongoing. But no Born Free cinematic endings here alas .....
.... a few do go to zoos and wildlife parks. These would be those where the timing of things didn't work out ( wrt the 18 month adolescent switch ), but also there are the occasional genetic 'sports' which dramatically reduce their wild survival. Thus they are kept. For instance there is an uncommon light haired variety - not albino - that don't last long if released ( regardless of rehab ).
