I believe that this statement is true for Windows and Linux machines.  But OS X/MacOS on my macs won't run an NVIDIA card that is more recent than a GTX 1080Ti.  Of course, OS X/MacOS doesn't yet support any AMD RDNA 3 GPUs. I can only hope that the new modular MacPro promised for later this year offers reasonable support for third-party GPUs.  SMH.

The one thing that you can count on with Nvidia cards is that the driver installation is an extremely simple process and they always work out of the box.

Keith, I apologize for not providing sufficient context for my "SMH" comment.  I meant for that comment to indicate my frustration with Apple, not with you.  Again, I apologize for typing without fully engaging my brain.

@Tigers_Dave, not

@Tigers_Dave, not necessary.

I was just commenting that those who decide to run Apple hardware or even AMD gpu hardware, particularly the newer cards, have a very difficult row to hoe when it comes to computing for BOINC projects.

Every time I comment on a Mac post or try to help out a AMD gpu problem post, I just count myself fortunate that I have not had to deal with all those issues.

I am perfectly happy to stay in my lane with boring old Nvidia gpus and their drivers.  Much, much, much less drama.

I took the Apple installed harddrive out of my Cheese Grater I7 Mac and put an SSD drive in it and installed Linux and it ran faster!! Everything works like you think it should without any of the Apple limitations.

Mikey, that is an interesting approach.  What GPU are you able to run in that system?  Later this summer I am going to retire a 2008 MacPro 3,1 and a 2010 MacPro 5,1 at work.  That will give me an opportunity to experiment with Linux.

I was running a generic gpu that didn't do crunching but was fine for monitoring what was going on. I THINK I have a Mac AMD 5770 gpu but haven't put it in the machine for either OS so far, it's got the tail coming off the back of the card. The pc is off-line right now to keep the electric bill down a little bit.

Efficiency curve on chips help a lot with this. If I reduce the TDP of my Ryzen CPUs by 40%, it only reduces performance by ~10-15% while single-threaded performance is equal.

Same goes for GPUs. My 7900xt crunches with 200W atm instead of 265W. 25% less power == ~5% longer WU times.

Aside from the power bill, heat, noise and gathering dust are less of an issue as well. These are very low hanging fruits.

I have not gone down this path as of yet.

I run with 2x WU per GPU and

I run 2x WU per GPU and after some time, one WU just stops and BOINC just goes on with 1xWU. Appears to be random and yesterday it didn't happen at all.

I did change the setting to 0.5 via web interface and not using local files. Is this something I need to change?

Restarting the service fixes things....until it happens again at some point.

As I'm using fairly new drivers and GPU (7900xt), this might be related. I'm not sure. I never used this feature before and ran with 1xWU per GPU until I got this card.

Hallo!I have a relative

Hallo!

I have a relative new PC - 3 weeks old - consisting of AMD Ryzen 5 7700X and GPU AMD RX6600 running under Win11P. I’m no GPU-Guru, so the GPU is running with original parameters set by the manufacturer by now. I’m wondering about the parameter I get from MSI Afterburner: GPU-load crunching FGRPB1G almost 100% but mean GPU-power is about 35 W only, GPU-temp 35 °C and vent speed lowest, which seems to be consistent. The RX6600 is specified for 132 W total mean power consumption with 8 GB memory. Can this be realistic or is this an artifact. Does playing games stresses the GPU so much more, and what does stress it then so much more. By the way, I’m happy about the low power consumption. If I had known before, that E@H crunching stresses the GPU so little, I would have bought a more powerful GPU.

Kind regards and happy crunching

Martin

what are the runtimes like? 35W seems very low with FGRPB1G, even for a low-mid range card like the 6600. the gamma ray app should put a good amount of stress on it.
